DeepSeek's new multimodal model cuts high-bandwidth memory needs to a quarter
DeepSeek put V4.1 Flash into general release today at 552 billion parameters, out of the closed beta the September 8th edition reported. The company puts its high-bandwidth memory requirement at roughly a quarter of the prior generation's, so the same model serves on fewer or cheaper accelerators. High-bandwidth memory is the costly stacked memory that sits beside an AI accelerator. DeepSeek credits a shrunken KV cache, the running store of attention state a model keeps while generating a response, along with a new architecture that fires fewer parameters on input than on output. On its own benchmarks the model passes V4 Pro, the flagship it is retiring. From Sept. 14, calls to the V4 Pro endpoint route to V4.1 Flash and bill at the Flash unit price.

Commerce Ministry rejects U.S. charge that Chinese AI firms distilled American models
A Ministry of Commerce spokesperson yesterday rejected the U.S. allegation that Chinese AI companies carried out industrial-scale distillation of American models, calling it groundless. Routing the answer through the trade ministry, which handles export controls, frames any resulting curb on model access as a trade measure rather than a security one. The advisory, issued Tuesday by the National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, recommended defensive steps to American firms. Distillation trains one model on the outputs of another, transferring behavior without access to the original weights. The spokesperson called it a neutral technique that U.S. labs also apply to Chinese models, and said Washington's use of anti-distillation measures to suppress Chinese companies would draw countermeasures. China is willing to join an intergovernmental dialogue on AI that the two countries' leaders have agreed to hold, the spokesperson said.

Map maker Amap builds a 3D world model of cities from satellite images
Amap released ABot-Earth 0.7, which the map maker calls the world's first 3D-native city world model. A world model learns how a space is laid out and how it changes. Amap's is trained end to end on 3D data rather than fitted to flat imagery as Google's pipeline does. The training data is 3D Gaussian splatting, a format that represents a scene as millions of colored 3D blobs. Amap says the model turns one satellite image or a text description into a kilometer-scale 3D city scene in about 10 minutes on a consumer graphics card. Output exports into game engines including Unity and Unreal Engine, and the company puts 3D mapping cost at roughly 1% of the traditional method's. Amap says it trained its Gaode Tutu robot inside an ABot-Earth simulation and, in Changzhou, Jiangsu, has tied ground vehicles, low-altitude drones and robots into one city-scale unmanned system.

Robot maker AgiBot ties control model success rates to training data volume
Zhiyuan Robotics, which uses the English name AgiBot, released GE-Act 2.0, a control model trained from scratch on robot manipulation data rather than built on an existing video generation model. If capability tracks data volume, Chinese robot makers can buy it with deployment scale rather than research breakthroughs. The model predicts both how a scene will change and what the robot should do next, so perception and control sit in one network. Evaluated on real robots with no fine-tuning for the test tasks, the G1-OP machine's success rate rose from 17.1% to 44.1% as training data grew a hundredfold. A second robot body that supplied only a sliver of that data gained 17.7 percentage points, which AgiBot reads as skill transferring between different machines. After fine-tuning it beat the pi0.5 and GR00T N1.7 models on benchmarks for unfamiliar environments and instruction following, the company says.

Rocket maker Galactic Energy runs its landing-capable engine for 130 seconds
Galactic Energy said it completed a 130-second test firing at rated condition of its CQ-90 engine at the Niutoushan test stand, after the September 1st edition's Zhishenxing-1 orbital debut. Deep throttling, the ability to dial thrust far below full power, is what lets a first stage come down under control. The CQ-90 is the main engine for the company's reusable Zhishenxing-2 vehicle. The 100-ton-class engine burns liquid oxygen and kerosene and throttles across 30% to 120% of rated thrust, covering both the ascent burn and the deceleration burn on the way down. That range comes from an adjustable pintle injector, which meters propellant through a movable central plug. More than 90% of the engine's parts are 3D printed, including a fully printed copper-alloy design in the hottest sections of the thrust chamber. The engine now enters reliability-verification firing, the step before engineering finalization and flight use.

The Macao-Hengqin Digital Trade International Hub Port launched a cross-border data service platform today, offering companies rule lookup, compliance assessment and log retention for data leaving the mainland. Its compliance knowledge base covers rules from 36 countries and regions, so a firm can check the receiving jurisdiction's requirements alongside China's in one place. That base holds cross-border data laws, regulations and regulatory interpretations from jurisdictions including Portugal, Brazil and Singapore, and is updated continuously. Firms enter details on exit behavior, entity type, data type and personal information scale, and the platform returns assessment guidance with the legal basis behind it. It also provides trusted-flow and log-retention services for outbound transfers.

Industry association starts drafting two security standards for AI agents
Drafting of two group standards for AI agent security formally began at the Inclusion Bund Summit in Shanghai yesterday, one covering how agents authenticate and are authorized, the other covering runtime security. Group standards are issued by industry associations rather than the national standards body and bind the members that adopt them. The requirements reach vendors before any national rule does. The Cyber Security Association of China proposed both, with Ant Group among the drafters. The identity standard would give each agent a unique, continuously verifiable digital identity and tie permissions to task intent, activating them with the task and revoking them when it ends. The runtime standard would cover the chain from user intent through planning, tool invocation and execution, requiring an unauthorized call or an intent deviation to be caught anywhere along it.

Chinese sellers list stickers that cover smart glasses' recording lights
State broadcaster CCTV found e-commerce sellers listing light-blocking stickers for smart glasses, priced from a few yuan to just over 10 yuan ($1.50), with some listings showing sales above 900 units. The indicator light is the main signal a bystander has that a pair of glasses is filming. Most of the sellers contacted said the sticker does not stop the recording. The debate started in June, when a passenger filmed a flight attendant with smart glasses while boarding and posted the footage. Zhang Jiyu, a law professor at Renmin University of China, said secretly recording someone with smart glasses may infringe portrait, privacy and personal information rights, even in public. Experts urged platforms to take down products advertised as bypassing recording indicators, and proposed signposted no-photography zones in schools, hotels and locker rooms.

Ant Group shrinks its world model to run on one consumer graphics card
Ant Group's Lingbo team released a 1.3-billion-parameter version of its LingBot-World 2.0 model, built to generate a navigable environment in real time on a single consumer graphics card. Running that on consumer hardware puts the capability beyond export controls calibrated to training-scale accelerators. The 14-billion-parameter main version was open-sourced in July, and Ant says it holds hour-scale continuous generation given suitable compute. Speed in the small model came from two rounds of distillation, one compressing the teacher model's many-step denoising into a few, the other curbing the drift that builds up over long generation. At AMD's IFA Berlin keynote, Senior Vice President Jack Huynh demonstrated LingBot-World generating explorable scenes from a single prompt, naming it with Zhipu and Qwen among open-source models.

JD.com releases a world model and opens its robot training dataset
JD.com released JoyAI-Echo WM, a real-time interactive world model it says scored 81.6 on the WBench navigation benchmark, first among interactive world models. The release came at the same JDDiscovery conference in Beijing as the 100,000-GPU cluster covered on September 9th. Publishing the data rather than only the model puts JD's own record of how people do physical tasks into other labs' training runs. The dataset, EgoLive, is the first release from 10 million hours of human embodied-task recordings JD Cloud is collecting, and universities and research institutes have asked to use it. In logistics, the company says its Super Brain 3.0 model cut end-to-end route solving for hundreds of millions of packages from minutes to seconds. Over the next five years JD says it will buy 3 million robots along with unmanned ground vehicles and drones.

Chinese Academy of Sciences system writes olympiad proofs a compiler can check
A mathematics research agent built at the Chinese Academy of Sciences solved all six problems at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad. Several large language models also scored full marks there. What separates this system is that it emits a formalized proof alongside the natural-language one. Formal proofs are written in strict languages such as Lean or Coq, where a compiler either accepts every reasoning step or rejects the proof. The system coordinates more than 30 specialized sub-agents and tools, among them a prover that converts natural-language proofs into compiler-verifiable code. Gao Xiaoshan, a researcher at the academy, said such systems function as research assistants and still cannot crack top-tier problems that need a new theoretical framework. For the olympiad's hardest question, a combinatorial game theory problem, it generated nearly 3,000 lines of formal code.

WeRide takes Spain's first license for driverless passenger cars
WeRide says it has obtained Spain's first operating license for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles, issued by the Directorate-General for Traffic, the agency that regulates Spanish road traffic. Spain is certifying a Chinese autonomy stack before an American one, and every kilometer driven under the license is validation data no competitor in that market has. Level 4 means the vehicle drives itself inside a defined area with no human ready to take over. WeRide applied jointly with Uber and AVOMO, the autonomous driving arm of fleet operator Moove Cars, with backing from the Madrid government. WeRide and Uber say they aim to extend robotaxi service to 15 cities worldwide by 2030. The Spanish permit gives WeRide licenses in nine countries, and the partners expect to open commercial service to the public in Madrid within 2026.

Unitree open-sources a control model for general-purpose humanoid robots
Unitree Robotics has open-sourced UnifoLM-WLA-1.0, an embodied foundation model for general-purpose humanoids, which it says sets new marks across several open-source benchmarks. The company that sells the cheapest capable humanoid hardware is giving away the control layer, which invites overseas developers to build on a Chinese stack. An embodied foundation model turns camera input and instructions into robot motion, in place of a separate controller written for each task. One copy of the model coordinates both tabletop manipulation and whole-body mobile manipulation. Unitree says it generalizes across grippers and hands as well as across tasks, and that in real-robot evaluation a single model handled 64 tasks spanning tabletop and whole-body mobile work.

Chinese robot makers show machines working in pharmacies, hotels and ports
A robot running Ant Group's Lingbo brain, on show at the Inclusion Bund Summit in Shanghai, is filling orders inside Guoda Pharmacy stores, identifying, grasping and sorting medication on night shifts. Working in aisles as narrow as about 80 centimeters, roughly two and a half feet, without store renovation is what separates a deployed machine from a demonstration. Keenon Robotics showed humanoids fetching clothes, running washing machines and folding, and says its service robots work in hotels including Shangri-La. Shihang Intelligence's Orca marine robot works from the surface to 10,000 meters without remote control, with pluggable modules for ship cleaning, port dredging and offshore solar maintenance. Shi Qinyu, who leads the Shihang brand, said Orca serves more than 1,000 large vessels, and that the company was picked in April for Singapore's national hull inspection and cleaning program.

Quantum scientist says Chinese firms are selling quantum computing for pig farming
Lu Chaoyang said some domestic quantum companies now claim to use quantum computing for drug development, quantum finance and even pig farming, claims the academic community finds inconceivable. Quantum computing is not a general accelerator but a machine that speeds up specific problems, he said, and no recognized quantum acceleration algorithm exists for large models. Lu is executive dean of the Shanghai Research Institute of the University of Science and Technology of China, which runs China's leading quantum programs. From a national strategy view he put the most important application in information security, where breaking the widely used RSA and elliptic-curve encryption schemes would be catastrophic for finance. The strongest research teams are still offering rewards to anyone who finds a quantum acceleration algorithm for work on large models, he said.

Chinese Air Force shows early-warning aircraft and tanker abroad for the first time
The Chinese Air Force put four aircraft types on static display at Egypt's second air show, which opened Tuesday at Alamein International Airport. Showing the KJ-500 early-warning aircraft and the YY-20A tanker abroad for the first time pitches the force-multiplier end of the inventory rather than fighters alone. The KJ-500 works as a flying radar and command post. The display also included the J-16 fighter and the Z-20K helicopter, all domestically developed and all shown at a foreign air show for the first time. CCTV Military calls the four a full-element air combat system spanning early-warning command, strike, long-range refueling and battlefield rescue. Jiao Lianjian, who serves with an unnamed air force unit, said crews flew thousands of kilometers across several countries to reach Egypt, a test of domestically made fighters' reliability. The contingent moved into the show directly from the China-Egypt Civilization Eagle-2026 joint air force exercise.

Hubei's five-year digital plan splits compute across three regions
The Hubei provincial government issued its digital construction plan for the 15th Five-Year Plan period, assigning three parts of the province distinct compute roles. Splitting high-end training capacity from low-carbon and storage capacity matches workloads to local power and land rather than concentrating everything in one hub. Wuhan takes high-end intelligent compute for model development and deployment, Yichang low-carbon compute drawing on its hydropower, and Xiangyang and Shiyan large-capacity storage plus regional backup compute. The plan also calls for forward-looking deployment of quantum, space-based and brain-inspired computing. It names artificial intelligence, embodied intelligence and brain-computer interfaces as targets for original innovation. Embodied intelligence pairs an AI system with a physical body such as a robot.

ZTE proposes carriers bill AI tokens by model quality
ZTE President Xu Ziyang said carriers designing token-based billing may need a token exchange rate, charging more for tokens from high-value models than from ordinary ones. That would put telecom operators, rather than model vendors, at the metering layer for AI consumption in China. A token is the unit of text a model reads or writes. It is becoming the metering unit for AI services in place of the bit. Xu, speaking at the China Unicom Partner Conference, compared lines from a Li Bai poem with amateur doggerel to argue that equal token counts do not carry equal value. Nearly 60% of internet traffic this year serves machines rather than humans, he said, and token call volume has risen a thousandfold over the past one to two years.
